The traditional carving style of the islands is based on geometric patterns. Many traditionally carved objects, although decorative, are also used in everyday life. These include supports for oil lamps, doors, tables, stools, sugar cane presses, ancient lamps, coconut graters, combs for hairdressing, and other objects of art. The carvings on the dining tables take us back to the time of the sultans when, according to the myth, a sultan wanted to have a support for eating, so that he would not have to put his food on the floor. More recently the coelacanth, the emblematic fish of the moon islands which dates back thousands of years, has become a favorite subject for artists.
